Standard ISO shipping containers are either 6.1m (20ft) or 12.2m (40ft) in length, and all a uniform 2.4m (8ft) wide. Heights vary between 2.6m (8ft6) high (known as a DV), or 2.9m (9ft6) high (referred to as a High Cube or HC). At KD Containers, you have the flexibility to choose between far more dimensions. Please get in touch if a product you want isn't listed in the correct size for your project - we can usually make it to order.
Typically an empty 20 foot container weighs between 1.8-2.2 metric tonnes (about 3,970 - 4,850 lb) and an empty 40 foot shipping container weighs 3.8 - 4.2 tonne (8,340 - 9,260 lb) depending on what kind of container it is. For example, high cube containers tend to be heavier. The choice of fixtures, fittings and cladding will impact this.
Containers have a considerable lifespan, and can last well over 20 years with proper care and maintenance. Our second hand containers will naturally have some wear and tear, but can still be serviceable for decades.
Our containers are made from galvanised steel, providing ample security if you're using your container for secure storage.
Containers are technically fully portable, therefore they shouldn't be subject to the ordinary planning permission requirements as they count as a temporary structure. However, if this is being used as a permanent structure, or if it's being used in a residential area, your project may be subject to the same planning permission rules. Whatever your intended use, we would always recommend double checking with your local council first. In our experience, improving the exterior of the container with either a repaint or wood cladding and a sloping roof can often help secure permission from the council.
We use articulated lorries (max. 65ft long) to transport the containers. We are able to provide deliveries on small vehicles upon request if your site can't accommodate the standard vehicle. Get in touch for advice if you're unsure of your site access!
For an easy delivery, we ask that your site has a suitable turning circle for the vehicle to turn around and drive back out head on after delivery, and a minimum entry width of 10ft. The site should have solid ground as our vehicles can be extremely heavy. If they attempt to cross soft ground such as grass, gravel or shale, they are likely to get stuck and you would incur costs in freeing them.
